Mutant has a way of humbling you quickly. The waves look clean from the beach, but the timing is brutal. Sets don’t arrive evenly, and when they do, they move fast and without much warning. Getting into position feels like a gamble every time.

I copped a few beatings trying to line this one up. Too early and you’re stuck in the wrong spot, watching it fold down the line without you. Too late and you’re taking the full weight of the lip on the head, getting dragged under and pushed wide before you can even reset. There’s a fine window, and missing it usually hurts.

This frame came after sitting in that discomfort for a while—getting rinsed, regrouping, and trying again. Timing finally clicked for a moment, just long enough to let the wave stand up and show its shape. Mutant isn’t about perfection. It’s about persistence, taking a few on the head, and staying in long enough for one moment to go right.
