0068 Collide

Backwash is one of those things you don’t really notice until it changes everything. Waves hit the shore, water rushes back out, and suddenly the ocean isn’t just moving in one direction anymore. It collides with the next incoming wave, twisting the shape, thickening the lip, and often making things far less predictable.

This frame was captured as that moment played out. The wave stood up clean, but underneath it was fighting the water draining back off the rocks. The result is heavier, more explosive—less polished, but full of energy.

A lot of powerful shorebreak and slab waves owe their character to backwash. It can add size, create unexpected barrels, or turn an average wave into something unruly in a split second. Collide reflects that tension, where opposing forces meet and the ocean shows how quickly conditions can change when everything pushes back at once.
